1. The Night Of (2016): Confident crowd-pleaser

• Spoiler-free hook: A quiet college kid in New York borrows his dad's cab for one night. By morning he's the suspect in a murder, and the justice system starts to swallow him.
• Why it fits you: It's co-written by Richard Price, who wrote for The Wire, and it has the same novelistic patience and the same interest in how systems grind people down. Like True Detective S1, it gets its effect from dread rather than shock.
• Perfect for: Your week-long slow build. The first episode is nearly feature-length, so it could also be tonight's watch. Content note: it includes prison violence and crime-scene imagery, but no graphic sexual violence.
• If you liked it, also try: Mare of Easttown.

2. The Vast of Night (2019): Underrated hidden gem

Slow-burn sci-fi / mystery: 89 min · 📺 Prime Video (Amazon original, high confidence)

• Spoiler-free hook: In 1950s New Mexico, a teenage switchboard operator and a fast-talking radio DJ pick up a strange audio frequency over one long night.
• Why it fits you: Like Arrival, it's a first-contact story told through listening and interpretation, and its real subject is loneliness and longing. It's made on a small budget, with bold long takes and a sense of mood that recalls Villeneuve.
• Perfect for: A shorter night when you want to be unsettled and curious rather than exhausted. It uses tracking shots, but it is not found footage.
• If you liked it, also try: Arrival, obviously. Or Close Encounters of the Third Kind for the same sense of wonder.

3. Decision to Leave (2022): International / non-English

Neo-noir romance-mystery (Korean): 138 min · 📺 Mubi (Mubi handled the US release, so fairly confident, but this varies by region)

• Spoiler-free hook: An insomniac detective looks into a man's death from a mountain fall. He becomes dangerously absorbed in the dead man's calm, unreadable widow.
• Why it fits you: It's Park Chan-wook in a restrained, Hitchcock-like mode: a mystery that slowly reveals itself as a heartbreak. The film holds the same kind of hidden emotional gut-punch you loved in Arrival, and its fog-and-sea visuals echo 2049. It's also much less violent than Park's reputation suggests, with no graphic sexual violence.
• Perfect for: A night when you want a puzzle that turns into an ache and stays with you the next day.
• If you liked it, also try: Vertigo, or Mother by Bong Joon-ho. For Mother, be aware that the plot centers on the murder of a teenage girl.

4. Enemy (2013): Deep-cut Villeneuve

Psychological thriller: 90 min · 📺 Availability uncertain; it moves between services, so check before committing.

• Spoiler-free hook: A listless history professor spots his exact double as an extra in a movie and can't stop himself from tracking the man down.
• Why it fits you: This is Villeneuve before Arrival. It's a jaundiced, smoggy Toronto nightmare about identity and desire, and it's built almost entirely on atmosphere. It's also the film to watch if you want something that will have you searching for "ending explained" at midnight.
• Perfect for: A contemplative and restless mood. It's short, strange, and hard to shake.
• If you liked it, also try: Mulholland Drive.

5. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013): Against-the-grain wildcard

Dark comedy-drama / music: 104 min · 📺 Availability uncertain; it rotates between services.

• Spoiler-free hook: In 1961 Greenwich Village, a talented and self-sabotaging folk singer spends a freezing week couch-surfing and burning bridges while chasing a career that may never come.
• Why it fits you: It combines the Coen brothers with Oscar Isaac's breakout lead role. There are no aliens or detectives, but it gives you the same melancholy and quiet despair as your sci-fi favorites, with the Coens' bone-dry humor running underneath. Minor note: a cat is a recurring presence and there's one brief road incident with an animal. It isn't cruelty as a plot device, but I wanted you to know.
• Perfect for: A night when you want something that lingers without being a thriller: wry, sad, and beautiful to listen to.
• If you liked it, also try: A Serious Man.

🎬 Start Here Tonight: Decision to Leave

It's the best match for "lingers and makes me think": a clever noir that turns into a heartbreak. It runs 2h18, so start a little early.
