Claude Prompts

Anthropic · text · Website ↗

Claude is Anthropic's model, strong on long documents and careful reasoning: document analysis, code review, editing — work where a detail on page ten must not get lost.

Claude follows format constraints more closely than most and is more willing to say "there isn't enough information" instead of inventing something plausible. Prompts in this library that spell out what to do when context is missing therefore work particularly well with it.

Writing prompts for Claude

How Claude differs from ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok

Claude draws a clearer line than the others between what it knows and what it is guessing. It is more willing to say the information isn't there, and less likely to fill the gap with something plausible — which is why it gets used for document analysis, code review and editing, where an invented detail costs more than a missing one.

The second difference is format discipline. If the prompt says "answer in three paragraphs, no lists", Claude holds that even across a long answer, while the others tend to slide back into bullets.

Rewriting a library prompt for Claude

  • Material first, task second. It works more precisely when the document, code or thread comes at the top of the message and the instruction follows. The reverse order costs attention to detail near the end of the text.
  • Permit the refusal. Add a line: "If the answer isn't in the text, say so — don't fill it in." Library prompts that spell this out get the most out of Claude.
  • Ask for anchoring, not summary. For code: "show only the changed lines, with the file name." For a document: "quote the passage each comment refers to." It takes such requirements literally.

Where it falls down

It hedges where you want a straight answer: asked "should I do this or not", it returns a balanced case for both sides. The fix is an explicit constraint — "give one option and one reason, no alternatives."

It over-structures: a simple question comes back with headings and lists. When you need a short answer, constrain the shape as well as the length.

And it is softer than the others on deliberately sharp creative work: where a prompt calls for a mean tone or hard satire, the result comes out smoother than intended.
