ChatGPT Prompts

OpenAI · text · Website ↗

ChatGPT is OpenAI's most widely used model and the safest default for prompts from this library: nearly everything here was checked against it among others.

It holds long structured instructions and role framings ("you are an expert in …") well, so prompts with explicit steps and a stated output format work more reliably than short requests. When an answer comes out generic, adding the specifics of your situation usually helps more than rewriting the prompt.

Writing prompts for ChatGPT

How ChatGPT differs from Claude, Gemini and Grok

ChatGPT is the most neutral of the four. It has no pronounced bias: it doesn't hold a hundred-page document as tightly as Claude, doesn't pull from a live feed like Grok, and isn't wired into search as closely as Gemini. What it does better than the others is take a vague request at face value — where Claude asks for clarification, ChatGPT simply produces a workable draft.

The practical rule: if you want to run a prompt from this library once and see what comes out, start here. If the result matters and needs to hold up, check it against another model.

Rewriting a library prompt for ChatGPT

  • Add steps. It gains more than the others from an explicit sequence: "first restate the inputs, then propose three options, then work through the one you picked." The same prompt with and without numbered steps produces noticeably different depth.
  • Ask for questions before the answer. A line like "Before answering, ask me up to three clarifying questions" turns a generic prompt into a near-personal one and removes the main cause of generic output.
  • Phrase prohibitions as format. It holds negations worse than instructions, so not "don't be verbose" but "the answer must contain no preamble and no closing caveats."

Where it falls down

It invents specifics with confidence: links, quotes, figures, names of studies. Anything that looks like a checkable fact needs checking — especially when the prompt asked for "real-world examples."

In a long conversation it drifts from the format you set: by the tenth message the structure from the first has dissolved. Starting a fresh chat with an updated prompt is easier than pulling the model back into shape.

And when asked to "make it shorter" it cuts substance, not filler. Instead of "be brief", name what to remove: introductions, repetition, caveats.
