DeepSeek Prompts

DeepSeek · text · Website ↗

DeepSeek is an open model strong at reasoning and code, and markedly cheaper than proprietary alternatives at comparable quality on many tasks.

The prompts linked here are ones where step-by-step logic matters: calculations, planning, working through constraints. It helps to let it think out loud — prompts that ask for the reasoning to be shown give more reliable results on DeepSeek.

Writing prompts for DeepSeek

How DeepSeek differs from ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Two things set it apart. The weights are open, so the same model runs in DeepSeek's own chat, through third-party hosts and on your own hardware — the choice of where your data goes is yours, which is not true of the other three. And its reasoning mode shows the chain of thought before the answer, so you can see where a plan went wrong rather than only that it did.

The prompts linked here — trip planners, budget calculators, business plans, SWOT and negotiation frameworks — are exactly the kind where that trace pays off: many constraints, arithmetic, and an answer that is only as good as the step that produced it.

Rewriting a library prompt for DeepSeek

  • Put everything in one message. In reasoning mode it follows instructions in the user message more closely than a separate system prompt, so paste the whole filled-in prompt as one request.
  • Turn on search for anything current. Prices, opening hours, visa rules and exchange rates are not in the model; without the search toggle it will produce plausible numbers from memory. Ask it to mark which figures came from search.
  • Ask for the arithmetic, not only the total. For budgets and plans add "show the calculation line by line". Mistakes then sit in plain sight instead of inside a round number.

Where it falls down

In reasoning mode it overthinks simple requests: a packing list arrives after a long deliberation it did not need. For short tasks, switch the mode off.

Its written style is flatter than its reasoning. Plans come out correct but dry; if the result goes to a client or an investor, ask for a separate pass on tone.

And the hosted chat declines or deflects on some political topics, notably ones sensitive in China. That rarely touches travel or business prompts, but a market analysis involving China is worth running elsewhere as a cross-check.
